INTRODUCING OUR NEW PARTNER: JONATHAN CARTER
Our newly appointed partner, Jonathan, reflects on a career spanning more than 25 years at SRLV, sharing how the firm has evolved, the relationships that have shaped his journey, and his ambitions for the future as part of the partnership.
Joining SRLV as a trainee in 1999, Jonathan has grown alongside the firm, taking on increasing responsibility while building a strong reputation within our Entrepreneurs division. With a particular specialism in business valuations, corporate advisory and due diligence, he has supported clients through every stage of their business journey, from start-up to sale, helping them navigate key milestones and complex decisions.
As he steps into partnership, Jonathan discusses the value of mentorship, the importance of being open about career ambitions, and why SRLV’s people-first culture continues to make it such a rewarding place to work.
How does it feel to become a partner at SRLV?
It feels like a really exciting time to step into the partnership. The firm is going through a period of change, and there is an opportunity for the next generation of partners to help shape its future and continue driving it forward.
Did you always aspire to become a partner?
It was never my sole focus early on. My priorities were progressing through the firm and taking on more responsibility. Now that my children have grown, it feels like the right time to make that commitment and take the next step.
What do you enjoy most about working at SRLV?
The people, without question. There’s a strong family feel, and many of us have worked together for a long time. While people come and go in any business, there’s a core team here who make it a genuinely enjoyable and supportive place to work.
How has your career developed over the years?
I started at the firm as a trainee back in 1999 and have grown with it ever since. Over that time, I’ve seen the firm evolve significantly, both in terms of its size and the breadth of clients we work with. My role has developed naturally, with increasing responsibility and opportunities to progress.
What has been the most rewarding part of your career so far?
Working closely with clients has been a highlight. It’s particularly rewarding to support businesses from their early stages and then see them grow and succeed over time. Being part of that journey is incredibly fulfilling.
Have you benefited from mentorship during your career?
I have been mentored informally by the partners that I have worked with over the years, which has been invaluable for my professional development. The firm also has a formal mentoring programme, which provides the opportunity to be mentored by partners in different areas of the firm. I was fortunate to be mentored by Stephen Marks, which gave me an insight into the creative side of the firm, and helped to broaden my perspective and better understand how different teams work and contribute across the business.
What is your area of specialism?
I work across a wide range of clients and sectors within the Entrepreneurs division, but one of my key areas of focus is business valuations. My experience has developed over the years and I undertake valuations for a range of businesses for various reasons, such as agreeing values with HMRC for tax schemes or probate, restructuring, business disputes and sales.
What advice would you give to those aspiring to become a partner?
Be open about your ambitions. The firm is very supportive, but it’s important to communicate your goals and take ownership of your career progression. Don’t assume it will just happen – be proactive and seek out the opportunities available.
What are you hoping to achieve as a partner?
I’d like to continue growing the valuations offering within the firm and play a part in the next phase of its development. More broadly, it’s about contributing to the firm’s continued success and ensuring it remains a great place to work.
What changes have you seen at SRLV over the years?
The firm has grown significantly, both in size and in the range of clients we support. Despite that growth, it has managed to retain its close-knit, family feel, which is something that continues to set it apart.
If you weren’t in this profession, what would you be doing?
I have always loved film so I’d like to imagine I’d be involved in the film industry in some capacity, although not in front of the camera!
