Valuations

For a creative artist or entrepreneur, their life’s work and businesses are amongst their most valuable assets. When it comes to realising their full worth, we provide specialist valuations, as well as guiding clients through the myriad of financial and tax issues that can arise.

EXPERT VALUATIONS FOR BUSINESSES & CREATIVES

We carry out valuations of private company shares, unlisted businesses and Intellectual Property (IP) assets of all sizes for clients worldwide, with a particular focus on corporate finance work and due diligence for acquisitions/sales, and media-related IP; including music recording and publishing catalogues, brand trademarks, and film franchises.

Valuation is about so much more than mathematical multipliers. The purpose of it, the reason it is required, will direct our entire approach. So while of course there are fundamental financial elements to examine and databases to utilise, there are a plethora of other factors that require careful consideration.

With 30 years’ experience of valuing complex, often iconic assets for global brands and creatives, our skill is in understanding the nuances of each valuation; from interpreting the market trends and influences to predicting and modifying the approach, and then negotiating accordingly to achieve the right outcome. Knowing our clients so well makes all the difference here.

We work closely with client advisors, alongside our Corporate Transactions, Tax, and Probate & Estate Planning teams, where required, to view all financial aspects in the round.  Our valuers are also sought-after expert witnesses, having supported legal teams in complex litigation and matrimonial matters for high-profile clients in the UK, as well as testifying in the US tax court.

MUSIC CATALOGUE VALUATIONS

We are renowned in the industry as expert valuers of businesses, brands and media-related Intellectual Property (IP), having acted for a wide range of clients, including global hospitality and retail groups, record companies, publishers, individual artists and their managers, music lawyers, banks and financial institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.

From valuing global film franchises, iconic music catalogues and literary rights to expert witness support for legal teams, clients benefit from our breadth of specialist knowledge across the creative industry.

In addition, our team has significant commercial experience of setting up and running music publishing companies, including acquiring music catalogues of all sizes and signing numerous administration deals.

We have valued various substantial music catalogues on both the recording and publishing side; this involves analysing an artist’s repertoire and forecasting its future value, based on its present-day value, as well as a market multiple approach.

Thanks to soaring values over recent years, music catalogues have become a billion-dollar investment market, with returns in the tens, if not hundreds, of millions. This has encouraged more artists to review their catalogue values even while they are still relatively young, with increasing numbers selling as they get older. There can also be numerous tax benefits to selling music catalogues during an artist’s lifetime, and we are ideally placed to advise here. Additionally, finance can be leveraged upon the copyright assets held within a music catalogue, which we can help to facilitate, having various contacts in the banking world who specialise in these deal structures.
