Music industry valuation expert joins SRLV

Our new consultant, renowned business valuation expert Alan Wallis, will be working alongside SRLV partners to expand the firm's specialist valuation and expert witness services for music Intellectual Property (IP), whilst adding to the team's existing expertise in other areas.

We are delighted to welcome one of the music industry’s most renowned business valuation and finance experts, Alan Wallis, who has joined our Creative Division as a consultant.

With more than three decades’ experience as a specialist valuer for music intellectual property (IP) matters, Alan led EY’s music transactions desk for 15 years, valuing some of the world’s most iconic music catalogues.

As a sought-after expert witness, Alan has supported legal teams with complex litigation and matrimonial matters for high-profile music artists in the UK, as well as being hired by a prominent entertainment lawyer and manager to testify in the US tax court.

Alongside his expertise as a business valuer, Alan brings significant commercial experience from his role as founder and COO of leading music publishing company Mojo Music & Media, which recently sold its extensive catalogue, including the works of REO Speedwagon, Kiss and Cheap Trick.

Commenting on his appointment, Alan said: “As one of the foremost advisory firms to the industry, it’s a privilege to be working as part of SRLV’s specialist valuations team and advise their high-profile roster of international music artists, producers and creatives.

“Whilst I gained decades of valuation experience at EY which covered the more technical aspects, running a music publishing business, buying and selling catalogues and doing my own deals has given me a much deeper, as well as first-hand, understanding of the challenges.  This means I can offer clients a bird’s eye view of the catalogue valuation industry,” he added.

As part of his consultancy role, Alan will be working alongside SRLV partners Stephen Marks and Steve Jeffery to expand its business valuation and expert witness services for music IP, whilst adding to the team’s existing expertise in other valuation areas.

Stephen Marks, music partner at SRLV, said: “We’ve known and respected Alan as a fellow industry advisor and one of the most experienced valuation experts for music IP for many years, and have always welcomed the opportunity to work together.

“Similarly to our team, Alan has led catalogue valuations for clients on both sides of the Atlantic, working closely with record companies, publishers, individual artists, music lawyers, banks and other lenders, as well as acting as an expert witness in high-profile litigation cases, so we complement each other extremely well.

“Furthermore, our catalogue valuation expertise is increasingly growing and sought-after by music clients so it’s an ideal time for Alan to be joining as we expand our services in this area.  His business and finance experience as a valuer and COO adds to our team’s existing industry-leading expertise and will be of significant benefit to our practice and our clients,” Stephen added.
